I was in my office today when the dogs started barking next
door. It was the kind of bark they do when somebody is coming up the path, so I
instinctively looked at the window. I swear I saw somebody pass it, so I went
to the door to see who it was. There was nobody there and nobody anywhere
around the house. It wasn’t the first time that’s happened.
And then tonight I did a double take because I thought I saw
a sheep walking towards me in the darkness of Mill
Lane. That disappeared, too.
It occurs to me to wonder whether becoming attuned to nature
involves casting the net a little wider, so that you become attuned to other
things as well. I’m not sure I would welcome that very much, but does one have
a choice?
