Since the Titanic is much in the news at the moment, it
might interest you to know – but probably won’t – that Captain Smith, skipper
of the ill-fated vessel, was born and raised only a couple of streets away from
where my father was born and raised, and where I lived for the first two months
of my life. And I once sailed more or less over the wreck of the Titanic
without even knowing it. (Although I think I had a bit of a notion that it was ‘around
here somewhere.’ It’s a bit difficult to tell when there’s nothing but water in
all directions.)
