As a photographer I took many pictures of sunsets, and as a
writer I described quite a few. There was still a little colour left in the
western sky when I went out for a walk tonight, and I came to the tentative
conclusion that words can describe sunsets better than pictures do.
A photograph is ostensibly an image of the real thing, but
it loses so much in scale and context that it’s actually a surprisingly inadequate
image. Well chosen words, on the other hand, can stir the imagination and put
the scale and context back. And to an imaginative mind, the result is much closer
to the actuality.
