I was thinking this morning about the development of
relationships. It’s a fascinating process because it happens through a
combination of both tangible and intangible factors.
On the tangible side you have the unequivocal words and
direct actions. On the intangible side you have the reading between the lines, the
assessment of circumstances, the interpretation of body language and the recognition
of a look in the eyes. When they all add up, it’s easy to get drawn into a
sense of, and belief in, the apparent reality of closeness.
Unfortunately, it seems there are more intangible factors
than tangible ones, so sometimes you get it wrong. When you do, it isn’t
usually difficult to draw yourself out again. It’s just a bit unpleasant.
