Today has been a proper April day – cool, but calm and
slightly damp. It's in such conditions that the fresh new greens seem to glow slightly.
I wrote in The Gypsy Rover about how April is, or should be, the tender link between winter and spring. One April a few years ago, winter hung on tenaciously. It was a cold month with frequent snow showers. Last April was too warm and sunny; May was being precocious and gate-crashing the cycle. Today was just right, and it reminded me of why I value April so much.

For thirty years I’ve been feeling the stirrings of the
earth energies in April. It used to tantalise me; now it enriches my life. And
Beltane Eve is the heady culmination of the process. Sixteen days and counting.
