Having once been a confirmed aficionado of classical music,
it surprises me that I’ve gone almost completely off it now. There are still a few
composers and pieces I like, but mostly I find it tedious.
I was tending to think that the problem lay with its connection to the Establishment Mind, but now I think it goes deeper. When I listen to
most classical music now, I hear too much mind and heart, and not enough soul.
(Vaughan Williams and Delius are the major exceptions, by the way.) Or maybe I’m
just becoming a slob.
