It was interesting to read the list of ‘base’ creatures that
Bram Stoker (through the Van Helsing character) gives as those whose baseness
makes them prey to the command of the evil Count Dracula:
Bat
Wolf
Fox
Rat
Owl
Moth
Some of these presumably stem from their association with
the night, but not all; and I should think that only the rat would make it into
the list these days. How common perceptions have changed in little over a
century.
