The Lady Vanishes: A Philosophy.

Now you see her, now you don’t.

I hate that.

‘Wisdom lies in expecting nothing,’ says the sage. ‘Life provides. Walk with equanimity through the slings and arrows of Her capricious temperament, my boy. Have no expectations, but accept whatever bounty She deems fit to lay before you.’

Sounds good, that. But occasionally – just occasionally, mind – following that doctrine makes me feel a bit like a stray dog wandering the cold, rain-lashed downtown streets late at night, desperately looking for the festering, half-eaten remnants of somebody’s discarded Chinese takeaway, knowing that if I don’t find some before daybreak, my emaciated remains will be providing a meagre breakfast for the fucking sewer rats by the morning!

It does!!

I’m going to watch The Golden Compass on the TV shortly. Lyra and Iorek had just better be good, or else my mood will grow troubled. It will.
