Something else that has proliferated in recent years has
been the installation of high power security lights. They’re usually far too
big for the amount of ground they have to cover, they wash large areas of road
in unnatural brightness, they shine uncomfortably into the eyes of anybody
walking past, and they add to the modern problems of light pollution and carbon
emissions. Seems to me they represent yet another example of an overreactive
tendency encouraged by a retail-heavy economy’s need to make people want
things.
And on a vaguely related note, albeit more positive, the
prize for the best dressed outdoor tree goes to the shimmering blue cascade in
the garden of Rose Mount, Mill Lane, Norbury. Congratulations.
