A lot of small press publishers don’t pay for the stories
they use. That’s usually because they’re doing the whole thing for the love of
it and expect to make little or no profit. I don’t mind that as long as they’re
up front and say ‘we can’t afford to pay you.’ What I dislike is their use of
the phrase ‘Pays exposure.’ Exposure might be a desirable outcome, but it isn’t
payment. The phrase is, therefore, effectively an oxymoron and tantamount to
being fraudulent.
