I’ve just taken a walk to the post box and back, and nearly
the whole time I was out the air was full of the incessant banging of gunshots.
It brought to mind a little fantasy I have occasionally.
The beaters drive the birds from their cover until they panic
and take flight, only instead of flying into the killing zone as they’re
supposed to, they turn through 180° and head off in the opposite direction,
leaving the men with guns silent and bemused. Wouldn’t that be a triumph for
humanitarian values?
There are a few things about human nature I find difficult
to come to terms with, even when I understand them. The gratuitous killing of
animals is close to the top of the list.
