So what does that say about the whimsically inclined?

I was thinking of Flannery O'Connor the other day and realized that the best way I could describe her writing is "dark whimsy." That is, if that isn't an oxymoron.
'Whimsy' is one of those misty words, isn't it? The sort of words that impress their meaning into some part of your psyche where definitions are never very solid. Why shouldn't a misty word have a dark side? I'm happy with that, me being just an ordinary moron an' all. Respect.
