Engaging with the Archetypes.

Mel was telling me today that she feels she’s moving on from Maiden energy now and into Mother energy. She said she also wanted to understand the Crone. And then it clicked.

So that’s why middle aged women on horseback engage me in conversation. I’m no use to Maidens or Mothers any more; only Crones are interested in me now.

That makes me really happy.

I think i've always connected well with the Crone archetype, not that i think i'm wise, but more to do with the shadow sides of people and my self, with death and "ghosty" things, sensing spirit energies and "haunted" places... And of course now the Mother... Maiden energies have always been intermingled with the Crone for me.

There are a lot of images and myths, etc. connecting Maidens and horses. And in a lot of them they are elusive to men, like Rhiannon always just out of reach of what's his name.

I think you're an old soul, Andrea. And the word 'elusive' sort of... stands out.

By the way, you were supposed to giggle.

Um, ok. Hehe.

Also, let's not forget the Hetaera... she's an important archetype and gets left out of the 'trinity' a lot.

And then there's also the "Unofficial" archetype of Queen that comes after the mother and not yet a Crone. Even when I was little I identified with the Crone although I must say being a Queen has certain merits. What archetype are you now, Jeff?

Never heard of them, so I looked them up. Can't say I like the idea very much - too much of an undertone of breaking into a man's world, rather than being equal partners in a more balanced one. If I had to choose a fourth archetype, it would be the priestess to match the male magician.

Your comment came later, Wendy. Must admit, I did wonder about the queen.

My archetype? Slob.

Are you talking about the Hetaera?

If so, can you link me to what you read? I want to read what you read before i start yelling at you in case you have been misinformed... i'd like to give you the benefit of a doubt... lol.

I knew you'd be miffed. It was the Wiki article at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetaera

It seems to me that the implication is that they were the nearest women came to being the equals of men. That strikes me as not good enough. I'm more of an Oberon and Titania man.

From reading that i can see what you mean. I did a google search and there are very few satisfactory results for Hetaera or even female archetypes.

In a nutshell the Hetaera is a term used to describe a woman who fits sort of between the maiden and mother... a woman who is sexually active and has a 'healthy' sex drive without feeling ashamed. Of course, like all the others she's mingled in with the rest. Also a balanced Hetaera isn't um, slutty and doesn't allow herself to be objectified or subjugated nor does she objectify or subjugate other women or men.

How come you're such an expert on this sort of thing? I said you're an old soul, didn't I?

No expert... just read a lot about Goddess Spirituality, Goddess worship and a bit about Jung. I've read almost enough over the years to be a little bit of an expert... but i don't often retain a lot so...

I've actually been reading a lot about this sort of thing lately... inspired by the subject coming up quiet a lot in a book co-authored by Tori Amos... i'd definitely say she has a lot of The Priestess going on.

I'd say that the female voice, at its best, has the quality of the priestess about it.
