I forgot to say ‘Happy 4th July’ to my American
chums, so belated happy 4th July to my American chums.
We have no equivalent in Britain.
Nobody can agree on exactly when England
became a unified nation state, nor Scotland
or Wales come
to that. I gather Ireland
was only unified under British rule, and they’ve gone off down their own road
now anyway. The post-Roman concept of ‘Britain’
happened piecemeal over several centuries, and nobody gives a toss about Acts
of Union so the whole thing is a bit organic.
So, you Americans have a convenient date which you can
use to celebrate the transition from being Colonials to being Americans. I’m
sure you’ll get used to it one day.
