The Truth War.

Have you noticed how the Establishment is madly bringing its big guns to bear on Wikileaks? Big banks and multinationals, mostly. It seems that too many people and institutions are feeling embarrassed, and are determined that the truth shall not be told. And I can’t help suspecting that the accusations being brought against Mr A, concerning sexual impropriety in Scandinavia, might have a bit of a smell about them. Let’s face it, if you’re the sort of person or institution to whom money is no object, that sort of thing wouldn’t be difficult to arrange. But I don’t know the details of the alleged crimes, so my suspicions can’t be anything better than vague.

My husband and I have been discussing this a lot lately – how shocking it is that they're going after this guy so relentlessly (though no one seems shocked about the truths themselves, mind you, it's just good gossip and why not shoot the messenger?). Regarding the accusations in Sweden, we must tread carefully. It's tempting to say it's all a set-up which I agree would be very easy for such companies/governments to arrange. On the other hand, rape laws in Sweden are very strict and (thankfully for the rights of women SOMEWHERE on this planet) include different kinds of manipulation. One of the accusers is adamant (I have read, for what it's worth) and insists her allegations are just. So – this fellow COULD BE guilty of sexual impropriety AND yet also be responsible for uncovering the misconduct of big business and government, at the same time. Who knows. The truth is often a mixed bag of the irreconcilable, isn't it?

I think sex crime is a difficult subject, Della. Oddly, it's something that I, even as a male, find particularly horrific. And yet common sense tells me there are grey areas on which men and women will probably never fully agree, simply because our core attitudes to sex in general - engendered by genetic conditioning and biological function - are so different.

But yes, that's why I added the last sentence.

Yes, I appreciated your fairness there, just thought I'd add my two cents :) Great that your snow has melted, though it looks so nice in the country! Here it's become dark and slushy and the dogs have left their mark.. a new blanket of snow is predicted for next week in Berlin – hopefully you will be spared! Take care.

We're having the big thaw at the moment, Della. See the blog post. They're forecasting a return to colder weather from Sunday, but at the moment its' looking like nothing more than what we expect of an average British winter. The last three weeks were exceptional even by Jan/Feb standards.

I found the advantage of living in a city was that getting about was so much easier. The roads are the first to get gritted, and you've usually got shops within easy walking distance. The countryside does look pretty in the snow, but getting anywhere is that much harder. Having said which, I wouldn't swap. I'll put up with the winters for the sake of spring, summer and autumn.
