I just caught a scene from the John Wayne version
of The Alamo while flicking through the Freeview channels. It showed Mexican soldiers hoisting the Mexican flag on a little
mound of earth outside the town walls. A few feet away, also on the mound of
earth and pointed directly at the flag pole, was a canon.
Why would anybody put a canon there? It wasn’t
part of a battery of canon; there were no other canons in sight. It was a
lonely little canon sitting alone and forlorn on a little mound of earth. And
if they’d fired it, the flag pole would have been shattered. One must assume
that it was the director’s attempt to inform the audience – presumably because he
thought they wouldn’t have got the message yet – that there’s a bit of a
dispute going on here.
