Local Animals.

There appears to be a family of feral cats living around Church Lane. The two nearly grown kittens came remarkably close to look me over this evening, while the mother (who has a very wild face) stayed back and eyed me suspiciously.

Not so the four horses who have taken up residence again in a field near the pub. They’re a friendly bunch who like to come over and have their noses stroked. The only problem is the black cob with the huge neck, who’s a bit of a bully and pushes the others out of the way so he can hog the attention.

The only disturbing encounter was with a new black lab that’s appeared in Bag Lane. It has bad body language, a defensively aggressive temperament and an oddly feeble bark. I have the feeling it’s been treated badly at some time.

You have such a deep appreciation for animals, Jeff. Far more than most humans do. All animals have that feral side to them if they haven't been totally domesticated and you appreciate it, except for those that are aggressive. I bet you'd write some great stories with animal protagonists.

I think it's because animals are unpretentious, Wendy. They just do what they do, and that endows them with a sort of honesty that you rarely find in ego-obsessed humans.
