I think it reasonable to suggest that the poorer
people in Britain are suffering most from David Cameron’s austerity measures.
The people on middle incomes are riding it with a little belt-tightening, while
the rich continue to get richer. It isn’t surprising, therefore, that Mr
Cameron’s popularity is at a low ebb.
But now the success of Britain’s Olympic
competitors is coming to his aid – or at least that’s what he’s trying to get
it to do. He can now declare, smilingly and triumphantly, that this is ‘a truly
golden summer for Britain.’ Actually, Mr Cameron, it isn’t, not for those at
the poorer levels of society for whom you are the architect of their misery. A
record number of gold medals being won in the capital doesn’t feed hungry kids in
the urban backwaters, or stop the homelessness statistics rising.
For my part, I truly hope that people see you hiding
your callous, over-privileged mentality behind the success of others, and I
truly hope they aren’t fooled by it.
