I switched it off. I don’t need to be shown images that demonstrate the depth of depravity to which the human being is capable of descending. I don’t need to have described to me the abuse, the cruelty and the endlessly inventive means of committing cold blooded murder in the vilest ways imaginable. I don’t need to have it pointed out that seemingly ordinary, civilised people not only committed these acts, but revelled in doing so. I know that side of human nature exists. Why do I need to see it again?
There’s nothing new in this. It’s been going on throughout history, usually in the name of revenge and often under the guise of religion or the pursuit of power. It still goes on openly in some parts of the world, and it still goes on less openly here in the ‘civilised west.’ What’s more, I have no doubt at all that it would take only a radical shift in circumstances for it to become commonplace here again. The human race clearly has the capacity to behave more basely than the basest animal. We just can’t seem to lift ourselves out of the slime.

I know, I also feel that I don't need to see or hear it and would much rather focus on the people who are actually trying to be constructive in this life. I have a habit of glimpsing at the news, trying to sift through it to find what's most relevant or important to me, or what I can actually do something about. Unfortunately I'm also confronted with some new kind of horror there, defeating my mood for the rest of the day. It's really too much for sensitive types...
Oh, guess what? Lulu is sending me "another" book, which it seems I don't have to pay for. I say "seems" because their message was a little vague, or maybe it was just computer-generated and that's why it failed to answer all my questions. Ha. Anyway, I frankly think they forgot to send the first one out in the first place...but fine, it'll make good summer reading.
Which is why I so like having you around, Della.
Had a thought. If I sell a book, I get a 'Daily Sales Report.' I'm sure I didn't get one when you ordered yours, so my guess is that it slipped through the system. And this might explain the latest mystery that I've queried with Lulu, but I won't bore you with the detail.
I thought so, Jeff (about the book :) and it explains the fact that they didn't answer my questions and were so eager to "replace" it. But all's well that ends well.
I've found Lulu very frustrating to deal with , Della. My impression is that their Help operators are well versed in their system, but lack the intiative to match the established system with the individual nature of queries. Time after time they kept pointing me to the same link, even though I'd explained in different ways that it didn't answer my question. Maybe that's just how things are now. Or maybe it's because they're from North Carolina.
(If anybody from NC reads this, please note that I'm only kidding!)
I couldn't figure out where they were from, though I asked. No wonder.
(Sorry, that's my NY talking, I don't really mean it :)
If anybody from NC reads this, please note that Della is only kidding. She's the only person in Germany with a sense of humour.
