The lunatic must first realize that he is crazy before he can question his sanity....
But that is the question, Jeanne. Do lunatics ever realise they're crazy? And if they do, do they perceive the craziness unconventionally and call it something else? What's more, should we all perceive it differently and call it something else? That's a big question. Maybe I'm straying towards shamanism.
