Sedative TV.

I just noticed that one of the MSN Headlines on my Hotmail home page reads:

Latest News on X Factor Stars.

It set me thinking yet again about the welter of sad, superficial trash that swamps the TV schedules these days, and about the fact that not only is it filling the nation’s consciousness, but people take it all so seriously. Headlines indeed.

And that set me wondering again:

Is all this stuff in place because it’s what people really want, or could it be that the Establishment creates it to play the role of tranquiliser – to drug people up to the eyeballs so they remain complicit and content and don’t ask too many awkward questions?
