Whitney Houston’s death reminded me of something.
Some years ago I met Robbie Williams, not greatly known in America
but as big as it gets over here and in other parts of the world. He talked a
lot about how terrible the rock music business is, and how it often triggered
his own ‘down’ episodes of bipolar. He talked of the deceit, the lies, the
disrespect, the undue pressures and the rabid self-interest. It seems that when
people watch and listen to rock stars, what they’re seeing is the glitzy,
glamorous, manufactured tip of a very dirty iceberg.
Is it any wonder that some of the more sensitive souls don’t
survive the experience? And musicians are supposed
to be sensitive, aren’t they? Not in the rock music business, it seems. But
then, is the rock music business really very much about music?
