Cluster bombs are nasty things. Many of the fragmented bomblets
fail to detonate, and then lie undetected in fields, parks, kids’ playgrounds
and so on for years after a war has ended. Unsuspecting children pick them up
and get killed or mutilated as a result. They’re so nasty that they were banned
internationally three years ago.
Now the US
is lobbying the international community to legalise them again. Would some
American please tell me why.

I’ve developed the habit of making a final, late night blog
post shortly before going to bed. Often they’re lightweight, fun bits of
writing. The above is hardly lightweight or fun, and it was written on
autopilot anyway. What’s really bugging me because I can’t shake it off is the
latest example of a theme that’s been recurring since I was about five. Something
of great promise brought almost to within grasping distance, and then snatched
away again and trampled in the dirt. Will it only end when I do?
