Of all the places I’ve lived in my life, the one in which I
felt most at home was a village called Hilderstone in the neighbouring county
of Staffordshire. I only found out
tonight that it dates back to at least the 7thC, and that the origin of the
name is Anglo-Saxon for ‘the place of the warrior wolf.’
I left there in 1986, but still regard it as home. It was
where I took the first tentative steps outside the tram lines, and is the
setting for two stories: Whitesytch Wood,
which can be found here,
and The Gypsy Rover, which will go up
at A Handful of Stories if and when a magazine publisher ever gets around to
publishing it, as they’re supposed to have been doing since August!
