Let’s suppose I’m right in my belief that the individualised
human consciousness continues to function after the death of the body, and then
moves on to ‘partner’ another body, and continues to do that time and time
again down the millennia. This raises questions.
Firstly, does my consciousness have a character of its own,
or is it merely a blank canvas on which genetic inheritance and a range of
experiences are painted?
Secondly, does the picture so painted remain with my
consciousness and get carried forward to later partnerships, thus building up a
level of experience and concomitant wisdom that might lead somebody to describe
me as ‘an old soul?’
So the root question is: how much of me is JJ Beazley,
and how much is the (presumably) immortal, individualised consciousness?
And the final question: does it matter? Well, I think
perhaps it might if I’m trying to find out who I am.
