If They Only Had a Heart.

There’s an interesting little news item on Yahoo today. It’s a local story which tells of an incident not far from here in which a runaway lorry demolished the side of a house. The young woman who lives there saw the vehicle coming and managed to scramble her young daughter to safety in the nick of time.

But here’s the interesting bit:

The driver of the vehicle had left the handbrake off, so as I understand the law of vicarious responsibility, the company is liable for the damage. Well, they’ve paid the landlord £69,000 to cover the cost of repairs to the house, but have refused to pay the tenant anything for the loss of her car, which was crushed in the incident, or the loss of her belongings. And that’s not to mention any possibility of payment for the shock it must have been to miss death by inches.

Irrespective of whether the company is legally liable, wouldn’t you think they’d see the innocent young woman properly treated, just because it’s the right thing to do?

This is a perfect example of the corporate mentality at work, so many boos and hisses to you, JB Tool and Plant Hire of Leicestershire. I do hope you lose lots and lots of business as a result. In fact, it would be rather satisfying if a decent lawyer took you to court and bled you dry.
