The Luck Bag.

Looking back over my life to date, I’ve come to the tentative notion that luck is a finite resource, a quantity of which is handed to us in a bag before we’re born. It’s a bit like giving the kid so much pocket money to spend on a day trip out with the school. So, if you use up a lot of it by stuffing your face with ice cream and candy floss as soon as you get off the bus, you have to accept some tighter budgetary controls later in life. I know this isn’t an original theory, but I always was a bit behind the game in such matters.

Come to think of it, though, going on a day trip with the school is perhaps not such a bad analogy for life.
