When the James Whale picture The Old Dark House was released in 1932, the movie industry press
in Hollywood
gave it bad reviews. One publication called it ‘a somewhat inane picture.’ All
nine New York
dailies, on the other hand, gave it good reviews.
The American public weren’t impressed. After a positive
opening in the States, it suffered from bad word-of-mouth and failed miserably.
In Britain,
however, it broke box office records.
It’s now become a cult favourite and is considered a classic
of its genre.
Make of that what you will.
