One Word.

It’s surprising how many possible strands of meaning might apply when somebody sends you, without any preparation or explanation, a message that says

‘Goodbye…’

It’s especially so when the person is not a native English speaker, and is therefore unfamiliar with the idioms. And it’s fun to make a mental list of all the things it might mean – apart, that is, from ‘our correspondence is now closed.’
