we also have a Can Alley, and my lane is called Lid Lane. Never known why...

Wow. You live in a gorgeous area.
It's just off the southern edge of the Pennine upland, Victoria. To the north are hills (sometimes snow-capped in early winter,) to the south is the flat Trent valley, so it's a quintessentially English landscape that undulates. Rather nice.
