Having realised that any poetical pretensions I might
entertain find more comfort in the style of Kipling than Keats, I thought folks
might be interested to know where Kipling’s unusual forename came from.
Rudyard is a village in Staffordshire, close to where I was
born and raised. The landscape is picturesque, with a lake big enough to accommodate
yachts and a pleasure steamer. It was a popular holiday venue with urban
Victorians, and Mr and Mrs Kipling Senior spent their honeymoon in the area.
They liked it so much, apparently, that when the sprog came along they named
him after their fond memory of Rudyard and its lake.
