America
has descended on my blog in great numbers today, all courtesy of a post
entitled ‘Just to Annoy the Yankees,’ it seems. It occurs to me that many of
them might have been Mets fans hoping to read a pejorative rant about the
opposition. Sorry. I do understand the difference between the general ‘Yank’
and the more specific ‘Yankee’ (historical and sporting.) I was being lazy.
I’m inclined to think that the respective merits and
reputations of the Union and Confederate causes carry an
echo of the Roundheads and Royalists in the English Civil War. Sellers and
Yeatman described it thus:
‘The Roundheads were Right but Repulsive. The Royalists were
Wrong but Wromantic.’
