I watched part of a TV programme tonight about the D-Day
landings in Normandy. They
interviewed lots of those who took part, and one of them was a British Royal
Marines commando. On the first push inland from the beachhead, he stepped on a
landmine and woke up to find both his legs missing.
‘When I first saw that, I felt a bit put out,’ he said, ‘but
then I thought “Oh good, no more war for me.” That made me happy.’
I haven’t worked out yet whether this is a prime example of
positive thinking, or something else entirely.
