I saw a scene from a Hitchcock film today, in which Tippi Hedren pleads with James Stewart:

‘If I do what you tell me to do, will you love me?’

('Yeah. Just go fetch the damn ice cream!' I made that bit up because I'm in that sort of mood.)

Back to the serious point: What a simple world it must have been in those days.
