Two Notes on Temperature.

The temperature in my kitchen tonight is 10°C (40F) That’s hotter than it’s been in months. If I had air conditioning, I’d be tempted to switch it on.

All my life I’ve been reluctantly curious to know how Eskimos living in igloos go to the toilet. When I was a kid, there were still some old houses that had outdoor privies, and that was bad enough in a typical British winter. So what must it be like when the outside temperature is minus 50 and there’s a 60mph wind blowing? You wouldn’t want to expose any unprotected bits to it, would you? Things might freeze solid; things might snap. So what do they do?
