Paddling in the Political Cesspit.

George Osborne, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, is seeking to make political capital out of a tragic case involving the criminally-induced deaths of six children. The details are long and complex, but the point stands without going into them. The fact remains that Osborne is using it to shore up his defences in the face of mounting opposition to his swingeing cuts in the Welfare budget, and he’s doing so by appealing to the ignorant little prejudices of ignorant Little England.

This is reprehensible, and further evidence that we no longer breed statesmen in our society. What we breed are opportunistic career politicians who will plumb any depth to further their personal or ideological ends. They’re the ones who get to the top, and I think that’s a shame.
