At the end of The Ghost
Stories of MR James, the author appends a little piece about story ideas he’d
had but never completed. At the conclusion of the final one he writes:
‘Do not, in any case, bring it into the house. It may not be
alone... (Dots are believed by many writers of our day to be a good substitute
for effective writing. They are certainly an easy one. Let us have a few more ......)’
Which proves that dear, dry Monty had a sense of humour
after all, and gives me just a whiff of cause for embarrassment...
