We had local government elections in Britain
yesterday, and an A level student called Kate Taylor became one of the country’s youngest
ever city councillors when she won a seat in Plymouth
at the age of eighteen.
That pleased me. At eighteen, Ms Taylor is probably a lot
better endowed with both common sense and integrity than the majority of middle
aged plonkers who form the core of local councils.
What also pleased me was that I learned a new word. Ms Taylor’s
delight was not confined merely to having won a seat on a city council, but
further enhanced at having ‘trended on Twitter.’
Now, being a trifle deficient in the vocabulary department, I’ve
never heard the verb ‘to trend’ before, so I can only make a vague stab at
guessing its definition. Whatever it is, however, I do hope poor Twitter wasn’t
too inconvenienced by having been trended on.
