As a youngster, this song got well inside me. Even though
the lyrics are enigmatic, and even a bit ropey in parts, the line ‘…her
face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale’ is surely verging
on poetry.
What really turned me on my head, though, was another line:
‘One of sixteen vestal virgins who were heading for the
coast.’
What sort of an impression do you think that would make on a
young mind already showing the first signs of a High Romantic tendency?
