Snapping Back.

It’s often said (or maybe I should say ‘speculated’) that the spots on the wings of some butterflies are a defence mechanism. When a predator comes along searching for its next meal, it mistakes them for eyes on the face of something rather bigger than a butterfly and backs off.

But suppose we move evolution on a stage. Let’s suppose the predator gets wise to the ruse, but let’s also suppose that some bigger creature evolves a face like the wings of a butterfly.

‘This isn’t a fierce creature,’ thinks the first predator, ‘but merely a butterfly ripe for my delectation.’ Snap, it goes.

SNAP, goes the fierce creature. ‘Yum.’

Just think of the tricks you could play if you were God.
