Given that ancient astronomers had a reasonable
understanding of the cosmos, it strikes me as likely that mediaeval theologians didn’t
really believe that the heaven they
envisaged was somewhere up in the sky. That being the case, I wonder why they
encouraged the view that angels had wings. Could it be an early equivalent of
Big Pharma trying to convince the gullible that expensive medication is the
answer to all the world’s ills?
