I watched the recent Tim Burton film Dark Shadows last week, which starred, among other notables, Johnny
Depp. My recommendation to fans of Burton
and Depp (like me) has to be ‘don’t bother.’
The usual Burton magic is missing; the usual Depp presence
is mostly missing; the bad girl, played by Eva Green, is a wholly unsubtle
pastiche of 50s bubblegum glam; the only bit of characterisation sparkle comes
from Michelle Pfeifer, but she doesn’t get enough screen time; the denouement is
contrived, overly manic and farcical on the wrong side of funny.
It was average. Any director could have made it. I was
disappointed. Sorry.
