Being a Realist for Once.
I have another problem with the oversubscription of cookery
programmes on the TV. I see all those experts putting all that time and effort (not
to mention considerable quantities of ego) into producing supposedly delectable
dishes, and I can’t avoid the temptation to imagine what happens to the food
after it’s made the very short journey from the plate to the mouth. That’s the
point at which the whole epicurean tendency seems shallow and even illusory, and
that’s why I end up watching them for about ten minutes. Absurdity fascinates
me.
