Can anybody tell me, by the way, whether a Beltane fire should be lit on the eve of Mayday, or Mayday itself? Delusion is a form of anaesthetic.

I believe you would light it on the eve of Beltane and celebrate until the sun comes up. And then have a good romp in the hay :o)
Oh right, thanks. Three problems:
I think I'd be too tired by sun up.
No hay in the immediate vicinity.
Nobody to romp with.
I think an evening fire on the eve of Mayday will have to suffice.
Put some Red Bull in your Scotch. And i'm sure you could find someone!
