Ambiguity.

I heard somebody quote Mahler on my car radio today:

‘If I knew how to express myself with words, I wouldn’t bother to write music.’

Was he bemoaning his lack of facility with words, or claiming that music is a deeper, more complete, or more versatile means of expression? I’d love to ask him.

I'd say the latter, but then I suffer the same fate of being hopeless with words.
