'It is Happening Again.'

I was an avid fan of Twin Peaks. It was one of the few TV programmes that I ever found compelling. Each episode was shown twice a week on a British terrestrial channel, and so I watched them all twice. There were two scenes that stood out for me and stayed with me down the years, and one is particularly poignant.

The residents of the town are sitting in a road house late at night, listening to a melancholy band singing melancholy music. The music stops and all is quiet for a few seconds, building a sense of dark anticipation. And then the Giant Man appears on the stage, the man only Agent Cooper can see and hear. He utters a single sentence:

It is happening again.

The music resumes and we get a shot of the audience sobbing quietly. Even though the vision was denied them, the message came through. Every person in the room knows that it is happening again, and they know that the pain is about to be rekindled.

End of episode. Roll credits.
