Being a Bit Out of Step Again.

I read something in a TV listings magazine the other day. It was part of an introduction to a TV documentary, and said:

‘… at a time when more and more women are taking up lap dancing to make a living…’

Have you any idea what effect such a statement has on me? No, of course you haven’t. Well, I won’t bother to elucidate, I’ll just post a video of something I find a million times sexier than lap dancing. It’s supposedly taken from the period of the Tang Dynasty in China, which flourished at the same time as the Saxons and Vikings were hitting each other with big axes over here in the civilised west.

Yes, axes and blood abounded but those Saxons and Vikings were extraordinarily talented artisans crafting works of incredible beauty. So there, with a big fat raspberry.

I know. I made that remark feeling a hint of ambivalence, but I did so for two reasons:

1. It irritates me that there's still a colonially-inspired perception of Asian culture as being innately inferior to European.

2. I thought it would be relevant to place the Tang Dynasty into a recognisable historical context.

And watch it with the raspberries or I might start pressing the 'Report Abuse' button.

I knew you'd like the raspberry!

You see I'd thought of it the other way round, maybe because of my stint in Japan or perhaps thanks to the Romans portraying us as hut dwellers who curled up with their dogs and rarely washed. Which in fact describes me perfectly well, except for the hut!

You can be really quite disturbing at times...
