I just watched the first hour of the director’s cut of Amadeus. Everything about it so far is
splendid, the only problem being that I have to keep reminding myself that
there’s no earthly reason why actors speaking English while pretending to be
German shouldn’t speak it with an American accent. It’s an old and unfortunate prejudice to
which we British are prey in the matter of costume dramas. (And I have to say –
but in parenthesis so as not to be seen to be overstating the point – that the
acting so far is flawless.)
The music is excellent, too; and music is, thankfully, the great universal language which connects us all.
