The Next Story.

As promised, there’s a new story up at A Handful of Stories. This one’s for all the fuzzy folks out there who want a bit of feel good fantasy, not to mention seeing the bad guy get his comeuppance. And it would be nice if you could see your way to supporting Phillip and AC Hall of Hall Brothers Entertainment. They’re a couple of good ol’ boys from Texas (I think) who are putting a lot of work into getting a new publishing venture up and running. They treat both their readers and authors with respect, which is something that can’t always be said of small press publishers.

Question though: Do they have ‘good ol’ boys’ in Texas? The vernacular idioms of the USA sometimes confuse me, especially when there’s a hint of regional variation about them. I can’t imagine, for example, that they have good ol’ boys in New York or Chicago. But Texas?

Oh yes, definitely in Texas. And most anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

That's pretty much what I thought, Andrea, but it goes further, does it not?

In parts of rural England, the term 'good old boy' is simply one of general compliment; but am I right in thinking it's assocaited with 'redneck' in America? And isn't 'redneck' a questionnable appelation? Because if that's the case, messrs Hall might not like to be referred to as 'good ol' boys.' This is almost like knowing the rules of bowing in Japan!

Good ol' boys can kind of be a little redneck. We also have a term called the Good Ole' Boy System in the south that refers to police officers who take care of their own, like when one does something illegal the other officers will cover for him... and i think it also goes back to racists cops who would cover for a white person who committed a crime against a black person. I wish i could better discuss this with you, but i'm full of dinner and trying to stay awake. More later ...

Thank you, Andrea. Very informative. So that explains the mystery of GW being in the White House, then.

All this being the case, I doubt that messrs Hall are good ol' boys at all. I do beg their pardon.
