A Technical Question.

Is there a computer expert in the house?

I bought a new computer in January. It didn’t take long to discover that it has an odd habit: every night at midnight it boots itself up. I went back to the shop and asked them why it would do that, and whether there was any way to stop it.

‘Dunno, mate,’ said the ‘expert.’ ‘Must be something in the software. That’s Bill Gates for you.’

Helpful! So I asked my computer-buff friend, Rob. He told me my computer is definitely haunted. Right.

I can’t find anything in Windows settings that might explain it, so if anybody can enlighten me...

I'm currently listening to Sheila Chandra's album Roots and Wings. That woman has a voice to go mentally AWOL over. This has absolutely nothing to do with computers. Just thought I'd say it.

I'm most definitely NOT a computer expert, but I do have the answer for you.

You have technologically advanced Faeries in your house and they like to surf the web every night at midnight!

On a serious note, I'm sorry I can't be of any help. My husband is going to call his computer tech who keeps the computers up and running at his business, so if computer guy has any helpful input, I'll come back and post it here.

JJ, computer guy is assuming that your running Windows 7, so he said to go to Startup, then select Control Panel, then, depending on whether you have a laptop or a desktop, you should see an option that reads either 'Auto Startup' or 'Remote Startup.' Click on whichever one you have and then you should see 'set timer ON - OFF.' Click on 'OFF.' Hope this helps.

I meant "you're." Tired - going to bed now.

Thank you so much for your efforts, Victoria. I went into Control Panel, but there's no Auto startup option. I typed it into Search and it came up blank. I think I'm going to have to stick with the fairies theory.

I'm on Windows XP, by the way.

Many thanks again.

Have you written to the Windows XP Center itself on the net? Or I would post the problem on a google search and see what you may find. Someone, like the great and powerful Oz has to have an answer. I have a MAC so can't help you, although I do know a bit about computers.

BTW, love Sheila Chandra and when I got my tattoo's I was listening to her because she puts me in a trance. Fave. song, "Ever so Lonely". In fact, I"m going to listen to her music right now. Good luck with the advanced tech. faeries, love that ;)

Hi Wendy

I googled Windows XP Help and found the Microsoft help facility. As I got deeper into it, I discovered they wanted a lot of money to answer my question. It isn't worth spending money on. I also googled Oz, but came up with nothing to do with computers. But thanks anyway.

My favourite Sheila Chandra song is The Lament of McCrimmon.

My little folk have been prominent lately. I think there's a conspiracy afoot. 'I know, let's turn his new computer on every night at twelve o'clock.' All fall about laughing. They're doing a good job in the garden though, bless 'em.

My blog 'Followers' box (and everyone else's too) only appears after about 9.40pm in the evening (well, SOME evenings)l...I'm wondering if perhaps it's nocturnal. Or maybe the web piskies run off with it for nefarious purposes? I wonder if there are web 'borrowers'? I was just going to ask, have you heard Sheila's 'McCrimmon', and clearly you have! Wonderful, isn't it?!

Yes, it is. I love the way she combines Indian style and technique with the Gaelic form. She does the same in Weaving My Ancestors' Voices, but I'm sure you'll know that.

Ruthie's blog has followers with taste! Thanks for dropping in.
